CEC general manager Liu Liehong attended Brazil’s ground-breaking ceremony of Antarctic research station renewal project
On Feb 29, Brazil’s ground-breaking ceremony of Antarctic research station renewal project which is in the charge of CEIEC, was held in Punta Arenas, the southernmost city in Chile. The attendants are Brazil’s Defense Minister Rebelo, Minister of Science and Technology, Navy Commander, Air Force Commander, China’s CEC general manager Liu Liehong, Deputy General Manager Chen Xu, Marketing Director Sun Jie, and CEIEC deputy general manager Zhou Xin, etc. On the ceremony, attendants together unveiled the foundation stone which was a metal plate.
Rebelo pointed out, Brazil started Antarctic Project in 1982, aiming to study the Antarctic climate change’s influence on South America. However, this plan has been blocked in the result of research station’s damage. Thus, he said, Brazil sought cooperation with substantial Chinese enterprises, in order to reboot the research as soon as possible.
Liu Liehong said that Brazil choosing Chinese enterprise for reconstruction showed its trust to China and recognition to the technology of Chinese enterprises. As with Antarctic’s special construction conditions, severe climate, and high demand on environment protection, CEIEC should properly deal with each step, such as design, construction, and transportation. Liu hoped this project could become the model of cooperation between two countries.
Brazil Antarctic Station, full name as Commander Ferraz Research Station, located on King George Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctic, and was completed in 1984. Later, it was burnt down in 2012. In 2015, CEIEC, with quotation of 99.6 million dollars, won the bidding posted by the Brazilian navy. What’s praiseworthy is that it’s the first time Chinese enterprise undertook the Antarctic station construction for a foreign country. Chen Lianzeng, deputy director of China’s State Oceanic Administration, indicated that this project was important, profound, as well as in conformity with the strategic planning of the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road (the Belt and Road) and with the spirit of the "go global" strategy.
